For Camille, the dreaded “Hair Wash Day” typically occurred weekly in her household growing up, on Sunday evenings after church. The painful detangling process was often the worst part because her hair was so coarse and thick. All you could hear for hours were the repeated cries of her sisters and her yelling, “Ouch!” and her aunt’s repetitive reply, “Sit still!” This process was never pleasant, and as a kid, it felt like inhumane torture. Oh, but the results made it worth it.

Camille Briggs is a CR freelancer with coarse 4B/4C hair that she usually chemically relaxes.
Mary Beth Quirk, managing editor, has natural red, wavy hair that reaches her midback. She detangles her hair every time she washes it.
Tasha Massey, a senior administrative assistant at CR, has shoulder-length 4C hair.
Loni Briggs is Camille’s daughter. She has shoulder-length 4B-4C hair.
Jodhaira Rodriguez, a CR writer and tester, has long, box-dyed 3B-2C curly hair. She detangles two to three times a week, on every wash day, with soaking-wet hair.
Eliana (not pictured) is the young daughter of managing editor Ginger Cowles. Her hair is very dry, 4A with tight, springy coils that reach close to midback when stretched. Ginger washes and detangles her hair once a week with water and a leave-in conditioner for light moisture.
