Dog Nail Clippers and Grinders
Gonicc Pet Nail Trimmer
The Gonicc Pet Nail Trimmer is basic and inexpensive, but it gets the job done. The clippers have a guard along the back to prevent you from clipping more than you intend to, which could cause your dogs’ paws to bleed. Because they’re manual, they’re quiet. (This is ideal for skittish dogs.) And they almost always cut the entire nail within one go, making for an efficient process. The only downside is that these clippers aren’t high-powered. If your dog has long, unmaintained nails, you may need to use a grinder first to get them down to baseline, then use the Gonicc for maintenance every few weeks.
Litter Boxes
Amazon Basics Large Cat Litter Box
Need a litter box and don’t want to spend a lot? This is a great option, especially with the extra savings (even if it’s just a small discount). It could be the perfect way to keep your pets happy if you have a multi-cat home and need a multi-box solution. We tested this box with five different cats, and they all used it without any issues. In fact, the lower entrance made it easy for them to get in and out to do their business. And the snap-on lid offers a lot of privacy and helps keep litter in. But the latch isn’t super secure, so it may not be ideal if your cat is especially active in the litter box.
WoofiGo Stainless Steel Cat Litter Box
Stainless steel litter boxes have grown popular recently, thanks largely to the nonstick material that is much easier to clean than other traditional litter boxes. I personally own a stainless box for my cats, and it really is a simpler process to get everything disinfected when I change out the litter. And our evaluator had a similar experience, saying it only took a few swipes with soap and water and a generous rinsing to get it shining like new again. The one thing I will say is the sound of your cats digging around is much different (and much louder) when they’re scratching metal versus plastic.
Pet Beds
Casper Dog Bed
Casper, the same company that sells mattresses, designed its Casper Dog Bed, which is $139 to $249 depending on size, with two layers of foam construction (including memory foam), a soft nylon-polyester-olefin cover that fits tightly over its rectangular cushion, and raised bolsters around all four sides. While our first impression of the FurHaven bed was “soft” and “cozy,” this pick has a sturdier and more structured appearance and feel. The cover is removable and machine-washable and comes in three sizes to accommodate dogs up to 90 pounds. (We wish it were offered in a larger size to suit really big breeds.) Casper offers a 30-night risk-free trial and a one-year limited warranty, so you have the option of returning the bed if your dog doesn’t take to it.
Pet Cameras
Furbo Dog Camera
You can use a Furbo Dog Camera for your dogs and cats—and of the four cameras we used with our pets, this was our top pick overall. We liked it aesthetically, for its sleek white hourglass shape and bamboo cover for the treat bin, but it also comes with a lot of appealing features for training your dog—or at least figuring out who was really responsible for knocking the garbage over and spreading it all around the house. It’s also cheaper than other models we tested.
Pet Feeders
Petlibro Granary Smart Feeder
The Petlibro Granary Smart Feeder is easy to use and has an app that makes setting schedules and dispensing food a breeze. This automatic dog feeder dispenses precise amounts of dry food for dogs or cats and includes a voice recording feature that lets you call your pet for meals.
Petlibro One RFID Smart Feeder
The Petlibro One RFID Smart Feeder was the fanciest automatic dog feeder we evaluated (it came with great advanced features like a customizable LED screen), and it was on point with food measurements and schedules. But adult or small-dog-sized kibble got clogged in its chute.
Pet Hair Removal Tools
Analan Mini Pet Hair Remover
The Analan Mini Pet Hair Remover is a triangle-shaped pet hair remover with three uniquely sized ridged sides, and it did very well in our evaluations. The rubber material created a static charge that attracted the cat hair to the velvet pillow, so it picked up all the cat hair in our tests. (This was the only surface where it picked up hair: On the polyester-linen blend pillow, the hair bunched up into easier-to-pick-up piles; ditto for the carpet.) Beware of delicate sweaters. When we tried to clean a knit sweater, it often caught on the fabric.
ChomChom Roller Pet Hair Remover
If you can have only one pet hair remover tool in your cleaning toolbox, it should be the ChomChom Roller Pet Hair Remover. The ChomChom was a favorite with our at-home evaluators and the best-performing in our lab tests. What sets this tool apart is that it’s the only tool that gathers and picks up all of the pet hair it touches, from velvet to carpet. That said, it was tricky cleaning clothing with this tool.
Pet Strollers
BestPet 3 Wheels Pet Dog Stroller
The BestPet 3 Wheels Pet Dog Stroller is an inexpensive, lightweight pet stroller that might be best for puppies or small cats—it’s only recommended for pets weighing 11 pounds or less and up to 18 months old. It was very easy to assemble: Just unfold it and add the cup holder and wheels. In general, this pet stroller felt flimsy. It does offer a nice padded cushion for comfort, but the plastic lightweight wheels made for the wobbliest ride among the strollers we tested.
Costway Petsite 3 in 1 Pet Stroller
The PetSite 3-in-1 is multifunctional, easy to assemble and fold, lightweight, and sturdy. It’s also really versatile for travel. It serves as both a car seat and portable carrier, complete with a carrying strap. It has a maximum capacity of 33 pounds, so you could potentially fit two small animals, and the mesh top makes it easy to keep an eye on them. Our evaluator reported that it was easy to assemble and that the stroller moved smoothly, even on bumpier surfaces.
Pet Water Fountains
KittySpout Wireless 2.0 Stainless Steel Cat Fountain
The KittySpout Wireless 2.0 Stainless Steel Cat Fountain holds an impressive 108 ounces of water; one of our cat testers really liked using this pet water fountain, and the basin is large enough for midsized dogs. The setup took less than 10 minutes and only required a few easy steps. The manufacturer recommends changing the water every four to five days.
Petlibro Dockstream Smart Pet Fountain
The Petlibro Dockstream Smart Pet Fountain is a sleek and attractive WiFi-enabled pet water fountain that lets you accurately monitor your pet’s water intake. It holds an impressive 2.5 liters of water, and the power system consists of a magnetically powered pump that’s very easy to set up. If you want to monitor your pet’s water intake, you’ll need to download the free app. It runs quietly, and we found our dogs and cats all used it. That said, it’s expensive, and you need to replace its filters every two weeks.
Veken Pet Fountain
The Veken Pet Fountain was the easiest to assemble—and the most budget-friendly—of all the pet water fountains we tested. Once it was put together, it had a fun and whimsical feel to it. That said, it was the loudest among our contenders, though all of our pets drank from it without issue. The Veken Pet Fountain uses two filters, and the manufacturer recommends replacing them every four weeks.
Puppy Pads
Earth Rated Max Absorbency Pee Pads
Earth Rated Max Absorbency Pee Pads performed extremely well in water absorption, but they typically cost significantly more per pad and per 100 square inches than the other models we tested. But if these puppy pads are within your budget, especially on sale, you’ll probably love the four adhesive tabs on the back as much as we do. These pads didn’t budge on our floors and were excellent in shredding tests. We tested the “large” size, but it is also available in XL (28x34 inches) and 3XL (36x36 inches).
Toys and Puzzle Feeders for Pets
Ethical Pet Seek-A-Treat Flip N Slide Puzzle Dog Toy
Aside from serving as a stimulating activity for pets, puzzle treat dispensers can be a great way to encourage slow(ish) snacking. Nicky Besuden, CR’s associate director of new ventures, recommends this dynamic treat dispenser: “My dog loves all the treat puzzles.”
GioCiv Store Interactive Cat Toy, Hide and Seek Mouse Catching Game
Looking for an interactive toy to entertain and distract your cat that doesn’t require your full attention? This could be just the thing you’ve been searching for. Here’s how it works: Insert the small rolling, tweeting, light-up ball into the mat, then sit back and watch as your cat attempts to hunt down the ball.
Nina Ottosson Buggin' Out Puzzle & Play Cat Toy
A CR writer, Jodhaira Rodriguez, also sprang for a lick mat as a means of feeding her cat, Frank, his wet food, while making sure he doesn’t munch his meals away too quickly. For his dry food, she opted for this puzzle, which he loves. “It really slows him down and keeps him busy for a while,” she says.
Vacuums for Pet Hair
The Bissell FlexClean FurForce 4270L is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to both vacuuming and mopping functions. However, compared to some other robot vacuum-and-mop combos we’ve tested, it lacks certain amenities. The base automatically empties the device’s dustbin, but you’ll need to clean the device’s mopping pads and refill the robot with cleaning formula yourself. Its current price matches the lowest price we’ve seen this model sell for this year.
The Bissell ProHeat 2x Revolution Pet Pro Plus 3588F is selling at its lowest price this year, making it a deal worth seizing. Not only is the model an excellent cleaner of dirt and stains, but it’s also very good at removing moisture from carpets after a cleaning session. It’s relatively lightweight compared to some of the other carpet cleaners we’ve tested—it weighs 28 pounds when full—and comes with a pet upholstery tool and a tough stain tool.
True to its name, the Kenmore Elite Pet Friendly 31150 is very good at vacuuming up pet hair. If you’re looking for an upright vacuum with strong suction, this model has one of the most powerful hose suction among the uprights we’ve tested. But this upright is not exactly lightweight—it weighs 21 pounds—and our testers find the hose to be on the shorter side.
The Miele Blizzard CX1 Cat & Dog isn’t cheap, but at $150 off its usual price, it’s worth considering if you’re looking for a top-performing canister. It’s a great vacuum to have if you have allergies or asthma because it doesn’t release debris into the air as you’re cleaning it up from the floor. It also earns strong marks for vacuuming pet hair, making it a good choice for pet owners.
The Shark CarpetXpert HairPro EX251BRN is good for cleaning and drying your carpets, so it won’t leave them sopping wet after you clean. That said, it’s definitely on the noisier side. It’s a single-tank carpet cleaner with a design that prevents hair from getting tangled in the brush roll.
