Bar Soap
Dove Original Beauty Bar
This lightly-scented bar soap is long-lasting, moisturizing, and has a great lather. One evaluator found the moisturizing quality unpleasant, but others with dry skin may appreciate it. This bar soap is, after all, a classic.
Body Wash
Vanicream Gentle Body Wash
This was a favorite unscented option in our evaluation of the best body washes. “I would feel confident letting my daughter use this product on her sensitive skin,” one evaluator said. Another said he was “pleasantly surprised by how well it came from the bottle and how easy it was to use. It builds up a nice sudsy lather.”
Dove Sensitive Body Wash
Our evaluators universally loved this creamy, lightly scented body wash. One evaluator said, “Dove’s Sensitive Body Wash is the platonic ideal of what a body wash should feel like on your body.”
Deodorants
Salt & Stone Aluminum Free Deodorant
This deodorant, in the gender-neutral Black Rose & Oud fragrance, smells luxurious and incredible, though it isn’t exactly subtle. It does, however, work well at combating body odor. “This deodorant was heavenly. I kept wanting to sniff myself,” said one evaluator.
Detangling Brushes
Tangle Teezer The Ultimate Detangler
This brush is a good bet for fine or straight hair, but isn’t the best for folks with thick or extremely curly hair. It’s a sturdy yet lightweight brush with a comfortable grip.
Dermaplaning Tools
StackedSkincare Professional Dermaplaning Tool
This reusable dermaplaning tool was comfortable for our evaluators to hold, with a textured aluminum handle and a straight shape. “Something about the base on this tool felt substantial, and directly or indirectly, it made the entire experience feel very sophisticated and professional,” said one evaluator. It was effective at removing peach fuzz and stray hairs around the brows.
Flat Irons
GHD Platinum+ Flat Iron
The GHD Platinum+ flat iron delivered great results for all three evaluators who tried it. It has only one heat setting of 365° F, but it takes only 21 seconds to heat up and then keeps that heat consistent. It comes with a silicone holder so that you can store it before it’s cooled down all the way, and the swivel cord and pivoting plates make it easy to handle. Best of all, the On button is on the inside of the handle, so you won’t accidentally switch it off while you’re using it.
Hot Tools Pro Artist Black Gold Evolve Ionic Salon Hair Flat Iron
Hot Tools hair styling tools are a common sight at hair salons, and for good reason. Our evaluators found that this flat iron heated up fast and was easy to use. It has variable heat settings to give users more control, and the plates are slightly longer than most straighteners, a feature that could be useful for styling longer hair. It’s important to note that the temperature consistency isn’t reliable and could vary by as much as 20 degrees from the set temperature during use. It has a 2-hour window before it automatically shuts off, so you’ll want to remember to unplug it after every use.
It’s discounted by 52 percent—a huge bargain.
Hair Care
Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel
This medium-hold gel has a floral, fruity scent. One evaluator said the silky product had the perfect amount of hold without weighing down her 2C-3B curls, and it controlled frizz well. However, another evaluator, with very thick 3A-B curls with low porosity and dense strands, thought it created knots and frizz for her on day 2. It’s on sale for 50 percent off.
Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Defining Styling Gel
This product has a very strong, but pleasant, coconut scent. Evaluators found it excellent for creating defined, shiny, frizz-free curls; one evaluator particularly liked it for refreshing her 6-year-old daughter’s braids and perm rod curls.
Pattern Curl Gel
We liked this smooth, easy-to-spread hair gel. One evaluator found it made her daughter’s perm rod curls soft, with just a few flakes. The fragrance is pleasantly floral and herbal, and lasts for a few days. The sale price is a 30 percent discount.
Hair Dryers
The Shark SpeedStyle Pro Flex competes with the highly sought-after Dyson models, but at more than half the price. Like the Dyson models, our testers liked how easily the attachments snapped onto the hair dryer, and how you can rotate them without removing them. Its airflow is so strong that when turned on, it has a kickback.
It has another high-end feature: its IQ Speed Styling & Drying Suite automatically adjusts heat and speed depending on the attachment. The attachments are unique and feature-rich, including the Frizzfighter, which is helpful in making sleek bangs (and flyaways). The diffuser features different prong lengths depending on hair type, and its brush attachment includes boar bristles. Its highest temperature reading in our tests was 115° F.
At 40 percent off, it’s a steal.
Hair Stylers
Revlon One-Step Volumizer Hair Dryer and Styler
The Revlon One-Step Volumizer is beloved for a reason: It just works. One tester shared this pro tip to achieve the best results: Keep tension on the hair and work in smaller sections. Otherwise, you may end up with a head full of frizz. At 28 percent off, this is a steal.
Hair Steamers
Siswow Hair Steamer for Natural Hair
This steamer was the only one we tried that made no noise. We found it comfortable and effective, and a cinch to use. It was easy to store, too. It’s marked down 53 percent for this sale.
Hair Towels
DevaCurl DevaTwist Anti-Frizz Microfiber Towel Wrap
Most of our evaluators found this towel excellent for absorption. The towel itself is fluffy, silky, and comes in a cute pattern. It’s best for people with short to medium-length hair.
YoulerTex Microfiber Hair Towel
This thick, fluffy towel is easy to put on, and it stays in place well. If absorption is your number-one concern, though, this towel may leave something to be desired.
Lip Care
Lanolips 12 Hour Overnight Lip Mask
This thick lip mask was a favorite in our evaluations. It had a sweet, lovely scent that stayed on all night for our evaluators. It creates an initial, not-unpleasant tingle, and its thick texture makes it better for overnight wear than for layering beneath lip color. Snag this 20 percent discount.
Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask
The Laneige lip mask comes in a variety of scents and, interestingly, tints. It’s thick, sticky, and super-moisturizing, and stayed on all night for most of our evaluators. Stock up while it’s on sale for 34 percent off.
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Lip Sleeping Mask
Budget-friendly and easy to find, this lip mask was a winner in our evaluations. It’s excellent for sensitive skin and is quite lightweight, so you can wear it during the day. It’s not the most luxurious experience, but it gets the job done, and done well. At 48 percent off, you can pick up several—one for your purse, car, bedside, and bathroom.
Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask
Though this lightly-scented mask looks pink in the jar, it applies clear. It has a small spoon for application, which you tuck into the jar’s lid when not in use. It stayed on all night for one evaluator, who said, “My lips felt softer when I woke up.”
Micellar Waters
Caudalie Vinoclean Micellar Cleansing Water
This scented, luxurious micellar water comes with a pump bottle, which evaluators either loved or hated. It has a substantial texture, and one evaluator said, “In terms of performance, there’s nothing not to like here.”
Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water
This is one of the first-ever micellar waters, and is now a classic. It’s lightly hydrating and has a subtle scent, though our evaluators had mixed reviews with how well it removed makeup. This one’s probably better used as part of a two-step cleansing routine rather than on its own.
Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water All-in-1
This is a budget-friendly micellar to begin with; on sale, it’s a real steal. One evaluator found it effective and gentle; another said she had “no major qualms besides having to use a little bit more to get the tubing mascara off my face.”
Nail Polish Removers
Onyx Professional Nail Polish Remover Maximum Strength
The Onyx nail polish remover removed stubborn glitter nail polish faster than the other picks, and it held its own against traditional polish, coming in second place behind Cutex Ultra Powerful Gel Nail Polish Remover, but only by 48 milliseconds.
It wasn’t the best for removing gel polish, but it was also far from being the worst. A few things tipped it over the edge, though, making it our Top Pick: Some acetone polish removers are extremely dry, and this one was not. It didn’t make the skin around my fingers white, like some removers.
It also earned a 100 percent top-allergen-free rating from SkinSafe, which earned it a “best for sensitive skin” distinction, but it does contain a potential irritant, balsam of Peru. The kicker is that an 8-ounce bottle costs less than many others we tested, and it comes with a nail file.
Razors
Flamingo Original Razor
We loved how comfortable this 5-blade razor was to hold. It didn’t tug at hair, but wasn’t top-notch for curved areas, like knees. It comes with a holder that attaches to the shower wall.
Self Tanners
Loving Tan Platinum Mousse
One of our evaluators called this tanner her number-one favorite, hands-down. “I knew I had found my match. The application was easy, and the product went on smoothly. OMG … Loving Tan is perfection,” she said. It’s slightly fragranced, and is best for deep skin tones. Stock up for summer with this 25 percent discount.
Sleep Masks
Mzoo Sleep Mask
The Mzoo is affordable, well-designed, and effective at blocking light for most face shapes and head sizes. CR’s team of evaluators had a wide range of preferences and needs, and yet most agreed that the Mzoo mask was a great option. These make great gifts, especially at 26 percent off.
Straightening Combs
Drybar The Brush Crush Heated Straightening Brush
In CR’s head-to-head battle, this brush, discounted 25 percent, performed better for our testers with wavier and straighter hair than the Tymo. It also did the job quickly, which could make it a worthwhile investment.
“The grabbiness of the brush is really what does it for me,” said tester Mary Beth Quirk, who has long, wavy hair. “I like it so much better than the traditional clamp of a straightening iron.”
Toiletry Bags
Nishel Travel Toiletry Bag for Women
The Nishel Travel Toiletry Bag for Women is a hanging organizer, meaning you can hang it on the bathroom door with every compartment laid out in full view. This bag, on sale for 27 percent off, is an antidote to disorganization. It has several compartments, two of which have different-sized mesh pockets. Our evaluator also noted that it has a large capacity but still zips up easily even when full. The low price is reflected in the quality of the material, however, so if you don’t mind the fabric looking a little on the cheaper side (the reviewer noted theirs attracted a lot of dust) this could be a great choice.
