If you’re looking to shop without spending too much, there are plenty of products for sale that will cost you less than $50. The best part? They all perform really well in our lab tests and at-home evaluations, so you can trust you’re getting a good product at a great price.
Based on my observations of these items throughout the year, I strive to put prices into context. I look for discounts that are actually better than usual, so I can help you get a really stellar deal when you click that order button. But if something is always “on sale” for a certain price, it may not actually be the deal it appears to be. That said, it could still be a good value if the product works well, especially when it’s under $50. I want to ensure you have all the information, so you know exactly what you’re getting, either way.
This list focuses on items that cost $50 or less, from headphones to kitchen appliances and more. To see what else is on sale, visit the CR Deals hub, where I share all the deals I find.
Travel Gear
Travelon Anti-Theft Greenlander Sling Bag
With a built-in anti-theft security system, this compact sling bag can be a saving grace for those traveling with valuables. “This bag has a slash-resistant mesh barrier in front, sides, and bottom body panels, plus a slash-resistant strap. And the RFID-blocking organizer on the front locking zippered pocket is perfectly sized for a phone,” says Anne McAlpin, author of “Pack It Up: The Essential Guide to Smart Travel.” RFID, or radio frequency identification, prevents skimming theft, which can occur when illegally installed devices capture personal data like PINs for ATMs.
Hair Care
Revlon One-Step Volumizer Hair Dryer and Styler
The Revlon One-Step Volumizer is beloved for a reason: It just works. One tester shared this pro tip to achieve the best results: Keep tension on the hair and work in smaller sections. Otherwise, you may end up with a head full of frizz. At 40 percent off, this is a steal.
Tymo Ring Straightening Comb
In our at-home evaluations, this straightening comb worked best for testers with curly hair. It has five temperature settings, an auto shutoff feature, and is extremely lightweight. One tester especially liked that it could straighten the hair right at the root better than the Drybar Straightening Brush it was tested against.
The price is back down to the low we saw on Prime Day.
Kitchen
The Cuisinart CPT-520 2-Slice toaster allows you to customize your toast by selecting a specific type, such as white bread, pastry, whole wheat, waffle, or English muffin, for a toast job optimized for that specific texture. The Cuisinart CPT-415 Countdown Metal 2-Slice and the similar Cuisinart CPT-435 Countdown Metal 4-Slice are also high scorers. They ace our lab tests for color range and excel in our full-batch and toasting time tests. All three models feature a bagel setting that allows you to toast one side of the bagel more than the other, resulting in a crispy bite on one side and a nice chew on the other. On the four-slice Cuisinart model, there’s one set of controls for two slices on one side and a separate set of controls for two slices on the other. Our testers found these machines easy to use, and each comes with a three-year warranty.
Dash may not have the same name recognition as Ninja or Cuisinart, but the 2.6-quart Dash Tasti-Crisp Ceramic DCAF26CM air fryer earns solid scores in CR’s tests and comes at a sale price that’s better than we’ve seen so far for this model (even if it is a smidge about the $50 mark). With food contact surfaces made of nonstick ceramic, it earns top marks for ease of cleaning even though it’s not dishwasher safe. We found it runs more quietly than many other air fryer models to boot. The DCAF26CM has a small footprint, making it a smart choice for a dorm room or for those with limited counter space.
ThermoPro’s SmartBT Meat Thermometer TP920 is one of the lower-priced leave-in two-probe wireless thermometers. It sends instant temperature readings to your smartphone via Bluetooth, offering excellent response time and accuracy. The easy-to-use app estimates the remaining cooking time for nearly all cuts and varieties of meat based on guidelines from the Department of Agriculture.
With the coupon, this is just $1 more than it was for Prime Day, so be sure to check the box before adding it to your cart.
Outdoors
The Lerekam Solar Spot Lights are among the priciest outdoor ones, but you get unrivaled performance. Our testers were impressed by the duration of their light and ease of use. They can be angled, installed with ground spikes (included), or screwed to other surfaces. They have an on/off button and can be recharged with a USB cable (also included). Each of the lights in the six-pack has 40 LEDs, resulting in intense white light that shines wide over an area, not unlike a flashlight. That makes them ideal as spotlights. They’d be great for drawing attention to a water feature or an ornamental tree, but they can also be pointed down to illuminate a path or walkway.
Bed and Bath
Bedsure Heated Flannel Blanket
The Bedsure Electric Heated Flannel Blanket is thin but light. Though it’s cozy, it resembles an inexpensive fleece blanket you’d find at a grocery store. One side is striped flannel and the other is linty fleece. The flannel is not the best quality, but it does get hot. And it has the lightest wires of the blankets we evaluated. This is the price for a throw-sized blanket. Other sizes vary in price.
Personal Care
Nektek Shiatsu Neck and Back Massager
This massager, made famous on TikTok, falls in the middle of the pack in terms of pricing, compared with the other models we evaluated. The reviewer found that the nodes pressed into their neck in an uncomfortable way, but two others who tried it loved it, so you might find the massager is just right or not right at all (but don’t worry—there’s a 30-day return window on Amazon). However, when it came to heat, this massager really shone. It reaches temperatures of 109° F. You can use this massager on various body parts, and it even comes with a car adapter, making it a boon for road trips.
It’s now back to its Prime Day price—$5 less that we’ve seen in weeks.
Pet Essentials
Cat Mate C3000 Automatic Dog & Cat Feeder, 26-cup
This automatic feeder allows pet owners to schedule up to three meals a day, in any desired quantity, says Amanda Arnold, senior manager of business analytics at CR. The device has a maximum capacity of 26 cups and can be programmed to give out meals as small as 2 teaspoons.
Home Products
Swiffer PowerMop
The Swiffer PowerMop is a great all-in-one option for keeping floors clean. The cleaning solution is attached to the mop, allowing you to spray as you go. It uses single-use pads so you can just throw them away when you’re done (but there are plenty of reusable options out there, too). It works on most surfaces, and our testers were impressed with its ability to mop up liquids but found it struggled with dirt, pushing it around more than picking it up. But if you’ve got dirt covered with a broom or vacuum, the Swiffer PowerMop can be a great companion cleaner.
This was must $20 during Prime Day.
Coavas Privacy Film
This window film blocks sunlight and offers privacy. It’s thicker, making installation easier than some of the other window films we evaluated. However, instructions were minimal, and the tester did struggle to remove all the air bubbles. The tester said that it was the darkest film we tested and was opaque enough that it would be ideal for first-floor windows if you want to prevent passersby from looking into your home. Plus, it left no residue when removed. Coavas claims that its film blocks 90 percent of UV rays and 85 percent of infrared rays. and has visible light transmission is 12 percent, the lowest of all the products CR tested.
